What exactly is Sexual Assault?

By Merry Ware, LPC, NCC

What is Sexual Assault?  Many people are unsure as to exactly what is sexual assault, so you are not alone. It is sometimes used interchangeably with sexual violence. Sexual assault is an act or behavior in which a person sexually touches another person or physically forces the person to engage in a sexual act without their consent.

Types of Sexual Assault
  • Rape
  • Incest
  • Child Sexual Abuse
  • Groping
  • Domestic Violence

How many people are affected? Sexual violence affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. We all know someone who has been affected by sexual assault/violence.  The effects on the survivor can be damaging and detrimental. The effects can range from emotional, psychological and physical symptoms. Each person can be impacted differently. The effects can be immediate or can develop months or even years later. Some long-term effects include anxiety, depression and post-traumatic disorder (PTSD).

How can counseling help? When you attend counseling, you can talk to a licensed professional counselor that is trained and specializes in helping survivors of abuse. By talking to a counselor, you will learn and develop self-care strategies and coping skills to help you deal with the overwhelming feelings and emotions associated with the experience of being sexually assaulted/abused. These strategies can help you throughout your daily life.

At Survival 2 Victory Counseling Services, we honor the courage and strength it takes to survive and heal. We are here to help you and support you on your journey toward healing.
